Our walk of the week - Snowdon

Now that spring has finally sprung, the weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer and the flowers are beginning to bloom. So, it’s the perfect excuse to get out for a good weekend walk.

Mount Snowdon

Following on from our last Walk of the Week, we have a new location that’s a favourite among hikers - Snowdon. Snowdonia is a veritable Mecca for walkers with a range of walks to suit everyone, from families to experienced hill-walkers.

What is the best way to walk up Snowdon?

One of our favourite ways to scale Snowdon is up the popular Llanberis Path. This is a 9-mile walk that runs alongside the historic Snowdon Mountain Railway, which was opened in 1896. The path allows you to take in the magnificent views, from Moel Cynghorion to Moel Eilio, as well as the Snowdon Horseshoe and Llanberis itself.

If you want to stop for some refreshments along the way, the Penceunant Tea House is a great place to do so. This traditional 18th century cottage, on the lower slopes of Snowdon, is open all year round and serves up a wide range of drinks and snacks.

Being the most popular path up Snowdon, the Llanberis path can get a little crowded, especially on warmer days. Also, although the walk is on public footpaths, there are a few steep climbs and certain parts can become a little muddy in certain conditions – so make sure you go equipped with the right kit.

What kit might I need to bring for this walk?

This walk is considered to be moderately difficult, so the equipment you should bring includes:

I'm really wanting to tackle Snowdon but having broken my back last year in a snowboarding accident, i'm still a little wary and not sure what i'm physically capable of, so I think I should tackle an easier route - it's definitely given me some keen though!
