Our walk of the week - Hadrian’s Wall

It’s that time of year when winter is starting to give way to spring - the sunrise is getting earlier and it’s getting (slightly) easier to roll out of bed on a Sunday morning to go for that long weekend walk. This is why we wanted to start putting a series together on our favourite monthly walks that we’d strongly recommend to everyone who reads this blog.

Our first stop is a location that is steeped in heritage - Hadrian’s Wall. One of the most popular tourist attractions in the North of England, Hadrian’s Wall offers phenomenal archaeology, pubs stocked with delicious ales and hearty food, rare wildlife and stunning landscapes. In other words - it has everything that any hiker could want.

Hadrian's Wall Walk

What is the best way to walk Hadrian’s Wall?

One of our favourite routes that will allow you to savour the best bits of Hadrian’s Wall is the Steel Rigg to Housesteads circular walk. This is an 8-mile walk that will shed light on the history of the wall - in particular, mortar on the north side of the wall at Sycamore Gap is all that remains of a render that would have covered the entire wall at one time. You’ll also pass many monasteries close to the path, which were often constructed using stones taken from the wall.

If you want to stop for a cup of tea, Housesteads Fort is the perfect place to do so. There is a visitor centre with a quaint little picnic area, a cafe and a shop giving you the time to fuel up before taking in the spectacular scenery of Hotbank Crags and Crag Lough.

Although the walk is on public footpaths, there are some steep climbs and particularly in adverse weather conditions certain parts can become coated in mud - so make sure you go equipped with the right kit.

What kit do I need to bring for this walk?

This walk is considered to be of moderate difficulty, so the equipment you should bring includes:
