Read on to discover the must-have dog accessories you need for your next outdoor adventure…

In this article, we’ll be focusing more on the essential accessories that you’ll need to ensure that your dog stays safe and comfortable throughout an outdoor adventure.

Reflective wear

Reflective wear, whether that be an LED collar or reflective coat, is an essential outdoor accessory for all canines coming along for the fun.

When you invest in this must-have outdoor accessory for your dog, it’ll ensure that they remain visible in low light conditions – which is very important for cyclists, vehicles and other outdoor enthusiasts passing by.

What’s more, when you invest in reflective outdoor gear for your dog – there won’t be any restriction on when you can go out exploring, as you’ll have their safety covered.

So, whether you’re an early riser or plan on arriving back from a hike after dark – you’ll have peace of mind when your dog is wearing high visibility gear.

If you’re unsure of what type of reflective wear to invest in, here are some common accessories that offer high visibility:

  • Reflective dog jackets.
  • Reflective harnesses.
  • Reflective dog collars and leashes.
  • LED collars.
  • Attachable safety lights.

Portable food and water bowls

It’s likely that you won’t want to take homeware food and water bowls on an outdoor adventure, and if you and your dog are avid outdoor adventurers – it might be worth investing in portable bowls for your dog that can be reused time and time again.

Having access to food and water, especially when you’re out exploring nature, will ensure that your dog stays healthy and hydrated.

If your dog is trained to be off the lead, you’ll be all too familiar with bouts of zoomies and watching them run laps around you. This means that your dog will likely require water and a snack more often than we do in order to keep up!

What’s more, you won’t have to worry about specially designed portable food and water bowls taking up too much space, as a high-quality set will feature a compact and lightweight design, making it easier to store away and carry on the go.

Protection from the elements

A common misconception is that dog coats are only required throughout the winter season, which isn’t true. Dog coats are of great use throughout most seasons, especially if you plan on hiking up steep terrain.

For example, if you’re planning a long walk or hike with your dog that’ll see you climb high above sea level – the chances are that the temperature will drop.

Depending on what breed of dog you have (or how senior your dog is), it may be essential for them to have access to protective clothing. For example, short-haired breeds will likely be quicker to feel the cold and would benefit from wearing a dog coat during a long ascent.

Waterproof accessories

Following on from the above, it’s definitely worth checking the weather forecast to see whether you’re in for a few rainy days. If that is the case, ensure that everything your dog wears on an outdoor adventure is waterproof, or at least water-resistant.

It’s no secret that bacteria thrives in wet and damp conditions, and this is especially true when exploring the great outdoors. Not only will investing in waterproof accessories keep your dog safe from any potentially harmful bacteria, but it’ll also keep them comfortable.

A high-quality dog coat will also provide protection from wet weather conditions, allowing your dog to benefit from additional warmth, making them as comfortable as possible.

It’s worth mentioning that high-quality waterproof accessories for dogs tend to be much easier to clean (because what dog doesn’t love to roll around in the mud), and are much more durable than other options – so you won’t need to replace them as frequently.

Durable walking leads

Unfortunately, not every walking or hiking route will permit dogs off the lead. To avoid disappointment, ensure that your dog has access to a durable walking lead, so that no one misses out on any outdoor adventure.

If your dog likes to roam, this is still possible with an extendable dog lead. For example, the Regatta Extending Dog Lead allows for up to 3 metres!

You’ll also need to ensure that your dog lead is made from hard-wearing materials so that they won’t prematurely break when exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Travel dog bed

There’s nothing better than a warm and cosy night’s rest after a long day of exploring what nature has to offer – and the same applies to your four-legged friend!

Warm and safe sleeping conditions are essential for any dog, and there are plenty of superb options to choose from that are specially designed for outdoor holidays.

Travel outdoor dog beds are specially designed to be tougher than the average dog bed. This is important because your dog will likely be an attractive host to insects and other parasites in the area – so it’s always a good idea to ensure that the dog bed you go for has built-in protection.

They’ll also likely be odour resistant, waterproof and come in a variety of different size and shape options, making it easier than ever to keep any dog snug and warm after a long day of patrolling mother nature. As these types of dog beds are made for the intention of travel, they tend to be lightweight and can be stored away easily.

Additional safety tips for doggy outdoor adventures

Although these are not accessories, we thought it might be beneficial to include several safety considerations to keep in mind when venturing out on an outdoor holiday with your pooch:

  • Ensure that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.
  • Ensure that their tick, worming and flea treatment is up to date.
  • If you’re worried about your dog losing their way, consider investing in a GPS tracker. There are some great lightweight options on the market that attach to the collar.
  • If you plan on venturing out on a particularly hot day, make sure that you’re familiar with the signs of heatstroke. It isn’t as obvious with dogs!
  • If you’re visiting places with large bodies of water, consider investing in a doggy life jacket. Most dogs love having a splash around, but they can tire only after a short while in the water – so it’s better to be prepared!
  • If you plan on exploring places with rough terrain – consider training your dog to wear boots. This will provide your dog with protection from potential injuries.
  • If you’re walking or hiking where frost and/or snow is present, make sure that you wipe down your dog’s paws after the day is done. This is because water, ice and snow can contain harmful bacteria.
