Ooni’s journey began in Edinburgh back in 2012 with one idea in mind – to make the best portable pizza ovens in the world.
The founders, Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland, decided to bring their vision to life by focusing on specialising in high-temperature pizza ovens that could make the most delicious alfresco meals.
Fast forward to present day and Ooni is the go-to industry-leading portable outdoor pizza oven brand – on a global scale.
A fun fact about Ooni is that you may have already heard of them, under the name Uuni.
This is because the founders of Ooni always had dreams of becoming a globally recognised brand, and once they did – they discovered that their customers were having difficulty with spelling and pronouncing their name due to cultural differences.
This saw many foodies unable to find Ooni when they searched for the brand on the web. So… Ooni was born! The way it sounds has remained the same, however, the spelling is now more straightforward on a global scale.

To give its customers complete transparency when it comes to what their aiming for, Oooni has published a comprehensive road map which lays out (in detail!) its steps to becoming a more sustainable and ethical brand across the board. Ooni has also committed to publishing an Annual Impact Report as it strives in its journey.
As part of the outdoor cookware brand’s roadmap, Ooni has put Impact Policy goals in place which will help to improve relationships with partners and its internal team in the long run.
This policy also includes a Best Practices Guide, which is designed to support internal teams with their everyday work life and decision making. Here’s what Ooni had to say about this step in their roadmap:
“We will strive towards continuous improvement with our partners. We will collaborate and inspire wider change in our industry and beyond. Improving transparency and creating dialogue throughout our supply chain can create positive change.” – Ooni.
One of the many reasons why we’re proud to stock Ooni here at Winfields Outdoors is because of its dedication to fighting climate change. Ooni has an ambitious yet entirely possible goal of becoming a net-zero company. We’ll explain what this means.
Essentially, to be a net-zero company would require Ooni to add no incremental greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. To do this, Ooni would need to balance the emissions they create with the removal of existing carbon from the atmosphere.
Ooni plans to become a zero-net company by accurately measuring its full carbon footprint so that it can set out significant reduction targets however and wherever possible.
To gain a full understanding, Ooni has committed to its footprint being measured annually so that it can reduce emissions, helping to fight climate change and offset unavoidable changes.
Following on from Ooni’s dedication to becoming a net-zero company, the brand also donates 1% of its entire annual turnover to the Ooni Impact Fund.
This money goes directly to organisations that are dedicated to supporting not only climate change and environmental causes but also humanitarian and social movements.
Another sustainable goal of Ooni’s is to minimise waste by reducing the use of plastic and other unsustainable materials from its packaging. These materials will then be replaced with recycled materials.
With Ooni’s headquarters already having a zero waste to landfill policy, we’d say that they are headed in the right direction. Ooni is currently implementing its plan to become a zero-waste organisation across all direct operations.
What’s more, Ooni is also developing a Life Cycle Assessment which will help the brand to determine the full impact of its products. This includes what materials it uses and the manufacturing processes, as well as usage and end of life. This data will then be used to design future products with enhanced durability and reparability to align with its efforts on sustainability.
The last part (but by no means the less important part) of Ooni’s roadmap is social responsibility and its dedication to supporting the ten pillars of the UN Global Compact.
The ten principles are ethical codes concerning respect, dignity, human rights, labour laws, environmental impact and anti-corruption. Ooni also uses the Supplier Code of Conduct and implements these values throughout its entire organisation.
