Camping holidays have already proven to be more popular than ever this year.

Staycations have continued to thrive, and outdoor holidays seem to be the way forward among UK residents. But what exactly will camping look like for the rest of 2022?

We’re here to help. We’ve researched camping trends this year, so outdoor enthusiasts can prepare accordingly and know what to expect.

Read on to discover what camping in 2022 will look like…

Staycations are here to stay

Staycations are still a popular holiday alternative to going abroad in the UK, and if you’re planning one this year, it appears you’re not alone!

Visit Britain reported that 61% of the people who participated in their research said they plan to go on a staycation holiday before the end of 2022.

So, the pandemic may have been the reason for initial interest, but it looks as though the staycation trend is here to stay.

UK campsites will be busy

Following on from staycations remaining popular, campsites across the UK are also seemingly busier than ever.

The pandemic pushed people to discover what the UK had to offer regarding new experiences and holidays, as overseas travel was (and still is) limited. And as it turned out, people liked camping in the UK more than they anticipated!

Recent research suggests that people are more likely to opt for an outdoor holiday somewhere in the UK because of two things.

One, because there is ongoing uncertainty around travelling abroad, and two – because they tried it during the pandemic and loved the experience!

So, expect to share your UK campsite experience with more like-minded people in 2022!

Expect to see more first-time campers in 2022

In 2021, research revealed that out of all the people choosing to go camping in the UK, 38% of these individuals were first-time campers.

At Winfields Outdoors, we believe that nothing beats a good old-fashioned outdoor holiday, so it’s great to see more people opting to explore what nature has to offer. More the merrier, we say! 4.5 million more*, to be exact.

More groups of families

Camping, in general, has become more mainstream. However, family camping trips have increased, particularly when it comes to caravan holidays. So, expect to see an influx of families enjoying a camping adventure this year!

Outdoor enthusiasts will know how great camping can be for spending quality time with loved ones, and it’s great to see families take full advantage of the natural beauty in the UK.

Family camping is also a great way of introducing the kids to the wonders of the great outdoors. You’ll be able to fill the days with fun outdoor activities, whether that’s by exploring a new walking trail or cycling through a new area.

Not only that but just being on the campsite, cooking grilled favourites and sharing laughs over board games will likely become core memories for everyone involved.

Glamping campsites are booking up

Pitchup, a popular outdoor holiday booking provider, reported that those booking camping holidays in advance increased by 200% for 2022, particularly for glamping experiences.

Interestingly, outdoor glamping holidays in the UK are more popular than UK luxury hotels, according to Pitchup!

So, if you were planning to go on a UK glamping holiday sometime before the end of 2022 – we recommend looking at what’s available sooner rather than later.

More dog-friendly campsites

It’s no secret that we’re animal lovers here in Britain. So, it’s no surprise that more outdoor enthusiasts are opting to take their furry friends along for the fun!

Google data from 2021 saw searches for dog-friendly holiday accommodation in the UK increase by a whopping 190%. And luckily, many campsites are now accommodating furry companions.

So, if you want to experience a camping holiday in the UK with your dog, you’ll likely have more campsite options to choose from than you did a few years ago!

COVID-19 safety precautions are still in place

Life as we (kind of) know it is slowly returning to normal, but most campsites are choosing to keep their COVID safety precautions in place.

Although we aren’t in the same position as a year ago, it’s still essential that we all continue to protect each other as much as possible.

So, if you’re interested in going on an outdoor holiday this year but still feel anxious about COVID-19, ensure to check that your campsite of choice has guidelines and safety procedures in place just in case. For peace of mind, if nothing else.

More campsite facilities

Now more than ever, campers feel as though their campsite needs to offer onsite facilities and activities.

Although most campsites continue to follow COVID-19 safety measures, they have now been allowed to re-open their once closed facilities due to social distancing.

And with UK camping becoming increasingly popular, campsites are starting to think of ways to stand out. So, expect to see more facilities and activities available than you may have previously.

Greener campsites

With the UK being more environmentally aware than ever, expect to see campsites encouraging environmentally friendly practices across the UK.

More campsites have started to understand the importance of becoming more environmentally conscious, and many are finding ways to incorporate this into their own locations.

Many UK campsites are looking into how they can run a more sustainable campsite, whether that’s by using solar panels, installing more recyclable waste areas, using recycled materials where possible, sourcing local or updating their environment policy for guests.

More campervan and caravan campers

Many UK campsites accommodate vehicles, and more people are opting for this type of camping. So, If you’re steering more towards a caravan or campervan outdoor holiday, you aren’t alone!

Camping in a campervan, motorhome or caravan is a superb form of outdoor holiday, and it certainly allows for more freedom. You’ll be able to venture off throughout the day, exploring natural hotspots and new scenery, then return to your pitching spot when the day is done.

Freedom to explore aside, if you have your own camping vehicle or you’re thinking about renting one, you’ll likely feel more comfortable than you did in previous camping experiences. You won’t have to worry about pitching a tent, but we recommend investing in a decent awning to ensure you have access to sheltered outdoor space.
